Living Democracy: Shaping Democracy and Citizenship with Art and Theatre

Democracy is lived in the presence of each other it cannot be a dead piece of paper. To make democracy work we need laws and customs but even more important is the participation of citizens.

Enough citizens need to internalize its values. At De Balie in Amsterdam, we use art and theatre as a tool to enhance and internalize democracy. Being in each other’s presence is essential to the survival of democracy.

Yoeri Albrecht is an internationally recognized journalist, opinion leader, media maker and media advisor. As the artistic director of Centre for the Arts De Balie in Amsterdam, he uses art to conduct public debate and, through his daily programming, draws the attention of public, press and politics to beauty, insight, untold stories, and unheard voices.
