- Dancing Library: Opening social spaces with playful methods
Session
What rule would you set for the future library? Would it regard the way we move, which sounds we can make or how the library should smell? The library is a public space that holds many unwritten rules that guide our behavior and affect how we communicate with each other. Who decides on the rules? For whom is it comfortable?
We take a closer look at the intervention of the Dancing Library and how the Reykjavik City Library has been exploring comfort and communication beyond language with different versions of temporary public living rooms. We will exchange playful methods of exploring social spaces co-created with users that give us a glimpse into the future of the library as a democratic platform.
Martyna and Dögg from the Reykjavík City Library also have an open installation of the dancing library during the whole conference.
Maximum capacity: 20 people
Hosts
Dögg Sigmarsdóttir & Martyna Daniel
Dögg Sigmarsdóttir is the Project Manager for Civic Participation at Reykjavík City Library and Martyna Daniel is the Specialist of Intercultural Affairs at Reykjavík City Library.
Someone once called us the cool library ladies, and that made us happy and proud. At first, you would not necessarily associate us with libraries because of our background in filmmaking, arts, law, curation and philosophy, but we are committed to making libraries more diverse and participative. Three years ago, we met in the Communication and Innovation Department at the Reykjavik City Library, and we have been exploring and experimenting together on topics relating to belonging, citizenship, and inclusive societies ever since.
