Session

Countering Misinformation, Strengthening Democracy: Co-Designing Community Centered Interventions.

Community institutions, including libraries, struggle to counter misinformation and disinformation.

We’ll share our experiences working with librarians and other community organizations on co-designing resources to counter misinformation and disinformation.

Our project incorporates key social and emotional factors that are often missing from interventions, including those within the library space focused on digital literacy or skill provision.

Dr. Jason Young, Senior Research Scientist, Information School, University of Washington. “I am a Sr Research Scientist at the Univ of Washington Information School. My work explores how emotion, culture, and politics shape how individuals and communities interact with information. I hold a PhD from the UW Dept of Geography.”

Stacey Wedlake, Research Scientist, Technology & Social Change Group, University of Washington Information School. “I am a Research Scientist at the Technology & Social Change Group at the University of Washington iSchool. My research explores how libraries and organizations support digital equity. I have degrees in Public Administration (MPA) & Library and Information Science (MLIS).”

Cindy Altick Aden, Professor of Practice, Distinguished Practitioner in Residence, University of Washington Information School. “I am the Distinguished Practitioner in Residence at the Univ of Washington Information School. Formerly, I was the Washington State Librarian, served in business development for OCLC, and was Amazon.com’s first librarian overseeing metadata and classification teams for Amazon’s products.”

Chris Jowaisas, Senior Research Scientist, Technology & Social Change Group, University of Washington Information School. “I am a Sr Research Scientist at the Univ of Washington Information School. My research focuses on open data about public libraries and how public libraries can use open data to learn about their communities. I hold a MLIS degree from the Univ of Michigan.”
